Chicken Welfare Roundtable: Collaboration for Change

More than 6 billion meat chickens, commonly known as ‘broilers’, are slaughtered in the EU each year with Poland, France and Spain currently being the biggest producers of chicken meat. Conventional broiler production causes an array of serious animal welfare problems, including crowded, barren living conditions, painful procedures, and physical and physiological problems associated with rapid growth.

The Time to Act is Now

We urge policymakers to urgently revise the Broiler Directive to reflect scientific advancements and public demand. We need:

  • Stronger Legislation: Set higher welfare standards, and include EFSA’s recommendations on broiler welfare, specifically on stocking density and use of slower growing breeds.
  • Corporate Responsibility: Encourage more companies to commit to the European Chicken Commitment (ECC).
  • Support for Farmers: Provide financial aid to transition to higher welfare production.

By working together across sectors, we can improve the lives of billions of broiler chickens in the EU, ensuring ethical and sustainable farming practices.
