On the annual meeting of shareholders of JBS in Brazil World Animal Protection Brazil put up projections through out the streets of Sao Paulo, the biggest city in Brazil and one of the biggest cities in the world, to show how JBS causes animal suffering and contribute towards climate change. Mighty Earth complaint against JBS highlights urgent need for accountability

News

Mighty Earth files complaint over JBS climate claims, strengthening the call to end industrial farming greenwashing and protect animals and forests ahead of COP30.

Environmental organisation Mighty Earth has filed a complaint alleging that JBS made misleading net zero claims and failed to disclose the environmental harm linked to its operations.

The complaint has been brought under the District of Columbia Consumer Protection Procedures Act.

The case has not yet been decided, but this shows growing concern from civil society about transparency in corporate climate commitments and the need for companies to back their claims with credible action.

JBS and the global cost of industrial farming

JBS is the largest meat company in the world, with extensive global operations.

Its business model relies on intensive animal farming and vast supply chains linked to environmental damage in key ecosystems such as the Amazon and the Cerrado.

This system causes suffering for animals who are treated as units of production rather than sentient beings with needs, and it puts irreplaceable habitats and biodiversity at risk.

Industrial livestock production remains one of the biggest drivers of deforestation, habitat loss and climate emissions worldwide.

Holding JBS to account

Our work has called attention to the role of JBS in accelerating industrial farming and its consequences for animals, communities and nature.

Previous investigations have shown ongoing sourcing from farms linked to wildlife habitat loss, despite public claims of progress.

We continue to call on governments, investors and regulators to stop supporting business models that rely on animal cruelty, land conversion and misleading climate narratives. Alongside partners such as Mighty Earth, we are urging a transition towards humane, ethical and sustainable food systems.

Public commitments must be credible

As climate commitments become central to corporate reputation, public trust depends on transparency and evidence.

Companies cannot make claims about net zero pathways while continuing practices that drive environmental destruction and widespread animal suffering.

Legal action such as this highlights the expectation that sustainability promises must be backed by clear plans, traceable supply chains and measurable progress.

Looking ahead to COP30 in Brazil

With COP30 taking place in Belém, Brazil from 10 to 21 November 2025, and related events running earlier that month, this moment is significant.

Brazil is home to some of the most important ecosystems on Earth, and it is a major centre of global meat production.

Decisions made at COP30 will shape the future of forests, wildlife and food systems. Industrial animal agriculture must be placed at the centre of climate discussions if we are to secure a viable future for animals and the planet.

A crucial time for animals and the environment

We must hold powerful companies to account for practices that harm animals and the natural world. Real change requires stronger regulation, investment in humane and sustainable farming alternatives and continued scrutiny from civil society and the public.

A more compassionate and climate safe food system is possible. We can move the world to protect animals, safeguard nature and secure a healthier future for all.
