Fireworks in Tibet disrupt wildlife and ecosystems

A large-scale firework event recently held in a remote ecological area of China has drawn sharp criticism from animal welfare and conservation groups.
The event, organised by outdoor apparel brand Arc'teryx and Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, took place in the ecologically sensitive region of Shigatse in the Tibetan Himalayas.
Despite claims of using environmentally friendly materials, the display has been criticised for its potential adverse effects on local wildlife and fragile ecosystems.
Wildlife disturbance and habitat disruption
The fireworks display involved choreographed pyrotechnics and coloured smoke across Himalayan ridgelines, which environmental experts warn could lead to severe stress responses in local wildlife.
Species such as snow leopards, Tibetan antelope, and pikas may experience disorientation, abandonment of habitats, and separation from their young due to the loud noises and bright lights associated with the event.
These disturbances pose a significant threat to their survival and reproduction.

The huge noise, intense light, and human disturbance from such events clearly have negatively affect on local animals, including pikas, blue sheep, snow leopards and birds.
They may trigger severe stress responses of some animals, disrupt their normal activities, and damage the fragile vegetation and habitats in that area.
No evidences show that salt licks could 'guide' pikas away from the burrows they hide.
We urge local authorities and experts to assess the environmental impact and take immediate steps to restore vegetation, reduce pollution, and assist any injured or distressed animals.
Disruptive activities like fireworks should never take place in ecologically sensitive regions.
